Hi Daiq, good thinking on the site!! it makes things so much easier!! I was just wondering with the dark buckskin stallion would he dilute a dun at all? I am getting a little dun mare soon and looking at breeding her.
we just lost our beloved Pie and her foal on the 12th June RIP my babies I love you always

Rinnie what do you mean by "dilute" a dun? Dun doesnt "dilute" it is either passed on and visible or it isnt, and dun can be other colours than just buckskin.

Yes You could get a Dunskin if you bred a Dun to my stallion Danny. I bred him to my Dun mare and I have a Dunskin filly from that mating. It is a very pretty colour.

So you were wanting to know if you could get a dun buckskin Rinnie? Otherwise known as a "dunskin" is that it?

It would actually be hard to say what you could get without the colour of your mare, you said she is dun but you didnt say what colour she is? As I mentioned dun can be any colour, our bay paint colt is dun also for example.

It doesnt really matter what colour Dun the mare is, you can still get a Dunskin. As the Buckskin gene will Dilute the Dun gene.

No the filly is a solid Paint. Which is fine with me as there are not too many Dunskins around. I might have a go at showing her one day in the Paint Bred classes. I would liked to have done that mating again but we sold the mare as we were going out of Quarter horses and ASh at the time.
This is the filly, I dont have any recent photos of her as I have just ben way too busy.

Um Daiq nothing "dilutes" dun, it either is dun or it isnt.

My point was if it was dunskin Rinnie was after if she told us the colour of the mare we could run it through the colour calculator and let her know the percentage of chance she has of getting one. :aa:

Daiq the foal is still a base coat buckskin, when you talk dilute you are talking about getting another colour entirely from the base, say chestnut dilutes to palomino and bay dilutes to buckskin.

It is a characteristic of dun that the coat colour appear shades lighter such as your filly looks. I just posted photos of King up in the horse section he is a bay dun and he looks more caramel, but he is still bay.

Rinnie without knowing everything about the mare and stallion here is the chances the colour calculator gives me.

10.94% - Bay Dun Tobiano
10.94% - Bay Tobiano
10.94% - Buckskin Tobiano
10.94% - Dunskin Tobiano
6.25% - Dunalino Tobiano
6.25% - Red Dun Tobiano
6.25% - Palomino Tobiano
6.25% - Chestnut Tobiano
3.65% - Bay Dun
3.65% - Buckskin
3.65% - Bay
3.65% - Dunskin
2.08% - Chestnut
2.08% - Palomino
2.08% - Red Dun
2.08% - Dunalino
1.56% - Smoky Grullo Tobiano
1.56% - Grullo Tobiano
1.56% - Black Tobiano
1.56% - Smoky Black Tobiano
0.52% - Grullo
0.52% - Black
0.52% - Smoky Black
0.52% - Smoky Grullo

It would be more accurate if Daiq knew the red, black or tobiano specifics of her stallion or you knew similar for your mare. I have put the mare as a solid as you didnt say she was coloured?

Anyway the calculator is here;

I would prob be looking at breeding her next season as she has osteo arthritis and i need to build her back up first so she can carry the next foal. with the filly she has now her back was no where near as bad as it is now. so i will let you know as it gets closer to the end of this year and i will put the deposit down. I will get some photos of her and post them next time im out at mums.

thanks for looking that up for me guys i am not sure about what you all mean by the red, black and stuff like that its soo confusing at the moment lol

HI Daiq - yeah i thought it would be its really bad and with this rain and then winter coming up I have some work to do lol. I have to keep trying things to help the arthritis. i have used msm before on one of my horses but i am not sure if it would work with the osteo arthritis in her back. do you know much about it?
