Land for wildlife?

Postby Dustee » Thu Jan 28, 2010 7:06 am

Ok so it kinda sounds self explanatory but I want to know more, just recently Mardy and I have seen these signs on gates everywhere while travelling!

What does it mean?

:dunno:
"Well, it's alright to be little bitty.
Little hometown or a big old city.
Might as well share, might as well smile.
Life goes on for a little bitty while."

Not the foggiest Dustee - have you tried Google :D
I would assume that maybe a group that calls themselves land for wildlife are purchasing blocks of land to leave 'wild and free' for animals - is it scrubbier type country Dustee?
There is a private group similar that has bought up some beautiful fattening country out here to leave natural for the animals (only problem is that there is no natural water on the place and they wont use the bores and dozed in the dams so all the animals have moved elsewhere  )

It sounds like a place where they do not clean up at all, so rife for bushfires.
Oooooh Look a Christmas Dragon..... and I get to have it all year!!!

I think that is basically it mate though around here the signs are on the properties that are 85% clear and a little patch of scrub lol

Our neighbour over the back is a wildlife nut - he has termite nests in his house as he will not harm gods creatures etc etc and his place is a massive fire hazard :<

we have a lot around the sunny coast and
My understanding of it is.
that you will not clear your land of native trees or any habitat trees unless they pose a danger to property or life. ( permit required)
You are allowed to burn to control weeds and to reduce the risk of out of control fires
and you can also clear any non native vegitation and plant natives.
Most people with the land for wildlife do burn as most australian native trees seeds will not shoot unless subjected to fire.
You don't have to be crazy to live in this world but it helps.

We have a so called land for wildlife across the road - this is about 100 acres of bushland with nothing growing in it that can feed any wildlife. The only wasy the wildlife go in there is for shelter from the wind, otherwise they can be found in MY paddocks.

Yep friend of mine down south had 50 acres set a side as a wildlife santuary. All it meant was they didn't use the the land to run cattle and other stock on. Mostly scrub and treed bushland that was left for the local wildlife to inhabit. Pretty much a bush fire hazard and how the animals ever learnt to read the sign so THEY knew this was a safe zone for them beats the sh!t outta me! Sometimes they also list it with National Parks and Wildlife.

Yes well most of the places we've seen the sign on are developed just as much as their neighbours.

Oh :hmm: ok well maybe those ones mean they don't stand on ants  .......or shoot pigs  ........or passing through animals can camp there the night without fear of being shot LOL!!

Or  maybe its a trick to get the wildlife there so they CAN shoot em! False sense of security stuff :anx:

I was told that they get a payment if they declare their land for wildlife too. Once it is declared though I don't know how/if you can 'undeclare' it again, like if you sold the property and the new owner wanted to do something with it. There's alot of it around here too - the $$ is the incentive I think. Most places that have it here are really messy and overgrown.

Most of the land for wild life places here still have stock on them
So not sure really how it works but I think it is up to the owner
